The thermal waste utilisation plant operated by EVN in Zwentendorf/Dürnrohr is located right next to the Dürnrohr coal and gas power station.

Benefits for the environment

The two plants work together as partners in an energy network without equal in Europe: the energy generated by means of waste incineration is used to generate electricity at the Dürnrohr power station, to supply district heating, and to provide industrial process steam.

This partnership makes it possible to save about 100,000 tons of coal as well as 10 million cubic metres of natural gas every year – an effect not only with economic benefits but also with environmental impact such as the reduction of emissions and the resulting improvement of air quality in the entire Tullnerfeld region.

And by the way, the waste is delivered by eco-friendly railway in special containers. Only a very small amount that comes directly from the surrounding region is transported to the plant by truck.
