The primary goal

The primary goal

of wastewater treatment plants is to process wastewater in such a way that the water from the treatment plant is of about the same composition and quality as the intended body of water.

The wastewater treatment process

The process of wastewater treatment includes several stages depending on the type of sewage plant and the composition of wastewater (domestic sewage, industrial wastewater etc.):

  • Mechanical pre-treatment (removal of coarse materials)
  • Grit chamber (sedimentation of mineral components, such as sand or grit)
  • Biological stages (bacteria and microorganisms decompose organic compounds)
  • Chemical cleaning (removal of any phosphorous compounds)
  • Sludge treatment (stabilisation of sludge by carbon decomposition)
